Research has shown that there are 8 different learning styles.  Earlier this week students took an 80 question survey to see which learning style they fit into.  Today they got the results back  Interests can change so nothing is set, but it is good for students to realize that their classmates learn in different ways and to think about how they learn best.  I will also share your child's results with you at Parent/Teacher Conferences.

There was a misprint on the invitation to the Family Night at the Blue Jays Game. It is September 28, 2018 against West De Pere.  Sorry for any confusion.

Field trip forms for the Madison Trip were sent home today.  Please read over the information carefully.  There are deadlines that need to be met.  Chaperone names will be picked on September 29.  There have been years when only 6 parents volunteered to chaperone and every one could go.  There have been years when I have had as many as 12 parents volunteer so a drawing had to be held.  Chaperones are not chosen on a first come, first serve basis.  Anyone who notifies me by the deadline would be eligible to have their name drawn.  If you have not done a Volunteer Background Check, please do so ASAP.  Information came home in the beginning of the year manila envelope.  If you have misplaced that information, your child can get it for you from the school office.  It can take several weeks for a background check to clear, so the sooner this is done the better.  Please remember the District Policy - even if your name is drawn to volunteer, if your background check is not cleared you can not go.

If you have not already turned in your Beginning of the Year paper work, I sent home another copy today.  Please get it filled out ASAP.

The first field trip of the year has been set.  We will be going to Madison on Wednesday, October 3.  We will be able to take a few parent chaperones.  If you are interested in chaperoning, please make sure that you have a Volunteer Background Check complete.  If you did one last year, it is good for 3 years.  I just need to see your card as verification of that.  If you have not completed a Volunteer Background Check, please do so ASAP.  The background check is only done online.  Information came home in the Beginning of the Year envelope.  The background checks can take up to a month and I wouldn't want someone to miss the opportunity because their background check was not cleared by the field trip day.  More information with permission slips will be sent home at a later date.

Students are bringing home flashcards that I wrote about in the Welcome Letter.  Some students still need to finish cutting out the cards at home.  These cards can stay at home.  Please have your child practice these at least a few times a week.  Practice time fits in nicely on days that they don't receive a Home/Connections.  We talked about ways that students could practice so that they become fluent and accurate with their facts.

A slip is being sent home today asking for permission for your child to be able to watch PG movies.  Although the note talks about Acknowledgements, the main purpose of the note is for your child to watch a movie about the Dust Bowl.  We are beginning a unit on Historical Fiction.  Students will be able to pick an era to study with a book club in class, but as a whole class we will be studying the Dust Bowl. We are going to use the movie to build background information for the unit.  If you are interested in looking up the movie it is called "The Dust Bowl" by Ken Burns.  We will begin watching the movie on Tuesday, so permission slips must be turned in by this day for your child to begin watching the movie.

Next week the school will be celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday with dress-up days connected to his books.  A note was sent home regarding the theme for each day.

With Baseball Spring Training starting in a week, the Fourth Grade Team has begun to plan our field trip to a Milwaukee Brewers game.  If you are interested in chaperoning for the game, you must have a cleared Background Check done before you will even be entered in the drawing for chaperones.  You can contact the office or your child can get a business card from the office with the web address for the Background Check - everything is done online.  You must do a new Background Check this year, even if you have done them in the past.  It will take at least 2 - 3 weeks to get back a confirmation email that your background check has cleared and another 2 - 3 weeks to get your Volunteer Card in the mail. This Background Check will be good for three years.

Students were reminded of the Winter Clothing rules today.

1.  You must wear a coat when you are outside during the winter.  Jackets are not to be removed until you get back to your coat hook.
2.  If you want to play in the snow, you must wear snow pants and boots.
3. If the blacktop is snowy or slushy, you must wear boots.  If you do not have your boots and the blacktop is snowy and slushy, you will not be allowed to run around during recess.  You will need to stay near the wall.
4. There is no sliding on the ice and of course no snowball throwing.

If students do not have the clothing that is needed, the lost and found is not an option for obtaining what they need.

If you have any questions regarding these rules, please let me know.

Students have been working hard to earn Cougar Paws for a chance to participate in a special Acknowledgement in January.  The Wisconsin Herd, a minor league team for the Milwaukee Bucks, has graciously invited Clovis Grove Elementary to Education Day on January 24.  10 lucky students from each grade level will be picked, via a raffle, to earn a chance to go.  There will be a basketball game held at 11:00, so we will be back in time for dismissal.  The Wisconsin Herd has donated the tickets and a lunch for each student who wins.  Names will be drawn on January 17 and permission slips will be given out on that day for the lucky winners.  I will be chaperoning the Acknowledgement so I hope many students in my room are picked.
