I am sorry that there wasn't a blog yesterday but I was home sick.
We are beginning our next Unit of Study - Information Books. The beginning parts of this unit will require a considerable amount of research on the famous person your child choose to write about. We did research for one week to get us started but now that the students are learning more about the structure of the chapters, they will need to do more research. MAP testing begins tomorrow and the computer lab and Chrome Book cart will be used for testing. Because of this the additional research will become homework. I have told students that they may count their research as their 20 minute reading time. Students may still be confused about what exactly to research but as we work our way through the lessons, it will become clearer to them. I sent home an example using Martin Luther King Jr. to help you understand what we are looking for, in case there are any questions. All students were required to check out a biography from the library, so students who do not have access to a computer may use this biography for their research.
Reading MAP test - Thursday morning. Please make sure that your child is well rested so that they can do their best. We have worked on goal setting for the MAP test. Your child knows the number they received in the fall and the growth number that MAP calculated for them for the end of the year. They set their own goal based on this data.
Homework:
Reading - 20 minutes - research time may count for this
Writing - find more facts about your famous person
Spelling - Describe Sort - we began spelling today instead of yesterday due to my absence

Lots of fun things to report:
Tomorrow is Packers Day
Thursday, Jan 22 is Pajama Day
Friday, January 23 is Blue and Gold Day, as my Michigan Wolverines are playing the Wisconsin Badgers the following day. I do think there are some students planning to wear red and white with W's on their clothes for some reason :)
Friday, January 30 we will have a tailgate party for Super Bowl Sunday. We are hoping to be tailgating in honor of the Packers but we will hold the party regardless of the outcome of Sunday's game. This is to celebrate 300 Class Cougar Paws - the most in the school. I will supply hot dogs and bus and am asking for donations of drinks, snacks and desserts. A letter will go home next week with the details.
Please remember that tomorrow is an Early Release. Students will be dismissed at 12:00
Wednesday, January 21 will be a late start.
MAP testing will begin soon. I will let you know the exact dates when I get the schedule.

Book Orders went home today. The orders are due, either online or to me, but Friday, January 23 if you would like to purchase anything.
One of the main focuses of this Math unit is writing equations. When you check over your child's homework, please make sure they are writing equations for the necessary problems. Also, if they do not write equations on their quizzes/test, the problem is incorrect even if the computation is right because the benchmark states they need to write an equation.
There is not any math homework sheet tonight. As a class, we still need practice on multi-step problems.

Next Friday, January 16 is the end of 1st semester. Please remind your child to have all assignments turned in so that they can be recorded on their report card and you can have an accurate view of their abilities.
