A reminder that Thursday morning will begin MAP testing for us.  Please have your child well rested so that they can do their best.

This is our last week of doing spelling as a whole class and learning procedures.  Next week your child will have spelling words at their level, based on the beginning of the year assessment.

September Reading Calendars will be due on Wednesday.  If you lost the calendar, one can be printed from my webpage or you can simply write a note in your child's agenda that they read at least 400 minutes for September.

Monday will be Picture Day for anyone who did not get their pictures taken during Open House night.  Information regarding packets and pricing went home last week.

Parent/Teacher conference slips went home today.  Please check the day and time and send back a confirmation regarding your conference.  I will do my best to accommodate you if the time/date does not work but I have a limited number of slots for each conference day and most of the slots are filled.

Tomorrow will be our first sorting spelling test.  We have been practicing the sorting columns this week.  Remember the words should be easy for your child to spell because we are just learning the procedures for setting up our test using sorting columns not being challenged with the spelling.

We now have a total of 68 Cougar Paws.  We will vote tomorrow for our next acknowledgement.

Book Orders went home today.  If you would like to purchase anything, please have your child return the order by September 25 or place your online order by this time.

Spelling homework is beginning tonight.  Your child will have an explanation for the homework stapled in their agendas. The fourth grade staff will not be collecting the homework, as we trust that students will be doing this each evening.  A copy of the words are being sent home to keep at home. Even though the words are easy for most students, this is about establishing routines for the first few weeks, not about spelling challenging words.

Students are being encouraged to use graph paper for adding and subtracting the larger numbers that we are working with.  I have downloaded a copy of graph paper on my math homework page or please feel free to search the web for graph paper, if your child would like to use some and did not bring any from school.  They can also turn a piece of notebook paper to the side to make columns with the lines.

We began spelling today.  We will be working as a class for the next few weeks before branching off into spelling groups. As we set up routines, we are using words that are probably below your child's spelling level.  Once we are in our groups, the words will be more challenging.

Our class is doing a fantastic job earning classroom Cougar Paws.  We have already earned 38.  For our 30 Cougar Paw Acknowledgement we voted to have a slipper day on Monday. We will not have specials that day, but please have your child also bring shoes for coming/going to school and for recess.

We went to the library today.  In 4th grade your child will be allowed to have checked-out two library books at one time.  When they return one book, they may check out another.  If they return both books each Wednesday, then they can check out 2 new books.

We are beginning to annotate an information article about Life on Mars.  We have highlighted unknown/confusing words, and wrote questions we have about the article.  This is a higher-level skill that will help prepare us for the Smarter Balance Test coming in Spring.

Today we went to the computer lab and played Dreambox.  Everyone was able to log into their account.  Remember that your child may also play Dreambox at home.  It is a fun way for them to learn 4th grade Math.

We had our first ticket trading and TGIF today.  Many students got Cougar Cash and others won the privilege of using a special pillow or chair next week.

Dreambox has been set up for this school year and we will be using our computer time on Monday to log-in and get everything started.  Please have your child bring a set of headphone or ear buds that they can leave at school to play Dreambox.  If they do not have this at school, they will have to play Dreambox with the volume off and this takes away for the fun of the math games.

Students are asked to tear out their sheets from their math workbook each day and bring them home to help with homework.  If your child is not doing this, please remind them.

Thank you to everyone who has filled out their beginning of the year paperwork.  If you have not done so, please try to have it turned in by next week at the latest.

We will not have Phy Ed and Music tomorrow due to our beginning of the year review of the school rules in the bathroom, doors, hallway, commons, etc.

Library and Guidance will start next Wednesday.  Your child may bring a book from home to read or find one in my classroom library until that time.
