There did NOT need to be a drawing held for Madison Chaperones so notes went home today to the parents who will be joining us as chaperones.  Please remember if you want to attend a field trip, the office must have a cleared Criminal Background Check on file.  These can take up to a month or more once submitted to be returned.  This has caused some parents to not be able to join us.  If you are thinking about being a chaperone anytime this school year, please contact the school office to see if your background check is current - they are valid for 3 years - or the secretaries can mail you the link that you need to complete the form.

Permission slips for the Madison Field Trip went home today.  We asked students to highlight important information.  Please take note of the arrival time at school.  Buses will not be running this early in the morning so you will need to make arrangements to make sure that your child is at school by 6:20 a.m.  Please also note the chaperone guidelines.  The sooner you make a decision regarding chaperoning the better.  If you do not already have a criminal background check done, do so as soon as possible.  These may take up to a month to clear, which is cutting it close to the field trip date.  We are only able to take 6 chaperones per classroom so if we have more than 6 parents volunteer we will hold a drawing to pick our parents.

Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Your child should be bringing home their first Math homework sheet given last Friday.  Students correct their own papers because it helps them reflect on their mistakes and gives a great opportunity for Math talk in my room. The students are asked to place a star next to each Math item that is correct, that way they are focusing on the positives and their strengths instead of being discouraged about items they need more practice with.  If I check the papers they typically just recycle them without taking notice of their mistakes and the mistakes are more likely to be repeated over and over and over again.  I do check over each Math paper before returning it so that I can gather data about who needs extra help and who has mastered a skill.

We had our first all school assembly today.  Ask your child about it.  It was certainly a moving experience.

This week we are continuing to establish routines, and procedures.  We are also getting to know a little bit more about each other.  Next week we will begin switching classes.  Mr. Viotto will be teaching your child Science, Mrs. Borowski will be teaching Social Studies and Mrs. Cunningham will be working with Spelling.  I teach all the Reading 2, which is grammar, author studies and genre studies, to all 4th grade students.

Homework:

Reading - read 20 minutes

Math - study flashcards
Home/Connections pages 3 - 4.  Students only need to do the EVEN problems but can do them all if they like.  Students were given 15 minutes to begin their homework in class.

Please remember to fill out the Beginning of the Year packets, if you have not already done so.  These were the packets given to you in the manila envelope.  If you need another one, please let me know and I will send your child to the office to get one.  These packets are extremely important.  Many of you remember the unplanned early dismissal last year because of the water main break.  The information contained on the Emergency Release form was the way we communicated with parents/guardians.

September 6, 2016

Multiplication flashcards went home today.  Your child should practice these daily or at least on the days they do not have a math homework sheet.  They can do these with another person or by themselves.  Memorization is only one strategy that we will be using this year to help your child become fluent with their multiplication facts.  As the curriculum for Bridges progresses throughout the year there will be additional strategies taught.

If you ever have any questions or concerns throughout the school year and would like to communicate through e-mail. please use my school email address:

fritschs@mjsd.k12.wi.us

I only use the email connected to this blog for the purposes of publishing the blog.  I do not check the email so if you would send something there I would not see it.

A reminder that there is no school on Monday because of Labor Day.

Thank you to the parents who have already filled out and sent back the beginning of the year packet.  If you have not done so, please do so as soon as possible as there is important information that the school needs to have.

Students received their first math homework assignment today.  It can be found on my webpage if you need a copy of it.  They were told that it needed to be complete as soon as they walked into the room on Tuesday morning.  They would not be given breakfast time to finish it.  Students were also told if the assignment was not complete that they would owe a ticket and need to finish the assignment during their lunch time, which is consistent with the other fourth grade classrooms.  With the Bridges Math Series it is common to have homework every two days instead of each night.  Also the homework is called Home Connections.

A note went home today about our End-of-the-Year Auction.  It will be held Wednesday, June 1.  I know that is a few weeks away but with Spring Cleaning it is the perfect time to collect donations.  Your child can bring in donations at any time.

A note went home today regarding Officer Geller.  Officer Geller is a Facility Dog that will be coming to school on a daily basis with Officer Jorgenson.

Please read the activity notes carefully that come home.  Many times the form and payment need to go somewhere other than school.  I would feel bad if a student missed a deadline because they brought the form to school instead of where it needed to go.

Students have been doing well turning in their homework on time and avoiding strikes for the Tom's Acknowledgement.  Please continue to make sure that your child's homework is done on a daily basis.

We will have a fourth grade spelling bee.  Unlike the National Geography Bee, this is just a contest held in the fourth grade classes - the winning student will not advance anywhere.  I sent home the word list for the classroom competition.  Winning students will advance to face students in Mrs. Borowski and Mr. Viotto's class for an overall winner.  Dates of both contests will be decided shortly.  I sent home the list of first round words for students to begin studying.

I am sorry for the confusion about spelling this week.  I had previously put the spelling list in mailboxes ahead of time and then realized that with all the changes in our schedule this week, there wouldn't be ample time to prepare for a test at school.  I, then, forgot to take the list out of mailboxes.  We will use those spelling words next week.

Monday, March 28, 2016

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing Spring Break.

There were many things sent home today.
  • A school "Lunch to Go" form needs to be filled out and returned by Thursday if you would like for your child to purchase a school lunch for the Brewers game.
  • A note about the state, Forward Test, lists all the dates and times that we will be testing.  We will begin on Wednesday.
  • The book, Confessions of a Former Bully, was sent home as part of a family read.  Ms. Ludwig will be visiting our school and we would like students familiar with her work.  Please read the book, fill out the feedback form and return the book by Friday.  The books will then be shared with the 5th grade.
Your child was sent a chess game online today.  There are many studies linking chess to gains in both reading and math.  I am at the very beginning level of playing chess but many of my students were quite good.  Your child has the link in their email to two different chess games to play against the computer.

Students have been reminded that if they have any missing work they will be sitting by a teacher on the bus to and from the Brewers game to complete the work.  Your child should know if they have any missing work.  Please make sure that they are keeping up with their work to avoid this.

I made a mistake in yesterday's blog.  Brewer Field Trip Forms and money are due by THIS Friday, March 18.  Chaperone names were due by LAST Friday.  I was fortunate to have many parents offer to chaperone but unfortunately this also means that there is a waiting list.  Chaperone names were drawn today and a note was sent home indicating if you were picked as a chaperone or put on the waiting list.  If your name was placed on the waiting list, your spot was determined in the order that your name was picked.

Tuesday will be Sports Day for March Madness Week.  Your child may wear items from their favorite sports team.

We have begun using the NCAA bracket in Math.  Your child is using the teams record to make fractions, decimals and percents.  It is always nice to use "real life math" in a fun way.  You might want to challenge your child.  I know that many picked Michigan State to win the Big 10 Championship.

Have your child return their final Fang by Wednesday.  I need to send in my order by Wednesday afternoon for Timber Rattler Tickets and Hot Dog/Soda Vouchers.

Remember that Brewers Field Trip Forms need to be returned by Friday.  Chaperones will be picked that day and Criminal Background Checks will be confirmed.

As you are helping and/or looking over your child's math homework, please make sure that they include the labels.  This is especially important in area and perimeter.  On the test they need to know that area is square units, square inches, etc and that perimeter is units, inches, etc.

Tomorrow is Blue and Gold Day, although from what I have been hearing I think there will be more than just a splash of red and white mixed in.

We have over 300 Class Cougar Paws.  We have voted to celebrate with our First Grade Buddies.  On Tuesday, we will be wearing pajamas, slippers and bringing in a pillow, blanket or stuffed animal.  We will spend part of the morning playing board games with our buddies.  The library has games that we can borrow and Ms. Svejda and I also have games.  If your child would like to bring a game from home please make sure it is something that a first grader could learn to play.  There will NOT be electronics allowed.

I was given a study today regarding reading minutes and the link to standardized testing.  Students who read at least 20 minutes per day typically score in the 90th percentile on standardized testing, students who read 5 minutes per day typically score in the 50th percentile on standardized testing and students who read 1 minute per day typically score in the 10th percentile or below.  I showed this data to my students today but I think they had a hard time understanding percentile.  I just explained to them the more they read the better they will do on testing.
