We will be spending the majority of tomorrow morning at Menasha High School practicing for the Winter Concert.

The Winter Concert is tomorrow night at 6:00.  Students may arrive at 5:45 and our class will be in Room 114.

If your child has not already done so, please have them bring in $2 for a surprise that we made last week.  The surprise will be coming home at the end of this week.  The $2 is to cover supplies.

If your child has not brought back their permission slip to watch PG movies at school, a reminder was sent home today.  We have earned an Acknowledgement Movie to watch during our Winter Party on Friday but we must have your permission for your child to watch a PG movie.  Also after Winter Break we will begin studying mythology and we watch "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief" as a way to end that unit.  This is a PG movie.

A permission slip went home today regarding PG movies in the classroom.  District policy is that Elementary classrooms can only watch G rated movies unless the classroom teacher gets parental/guardian permission to show a PG movie.  My class has earned over 150 Cougar Paws and will be watching an Acknowledgement movie during our Winter Party.  We also will be studying Mythology after Winter Break and we show "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief" as a end of the unit activity.

We have been working on our Demonstration Speeches.  Hopefully your child has been talking to you about this speech - your child is responsible for bringing in all necessary materials for the speech.  Your child picked a slot for their speech today.  I will get the schedule typed up and to you in the next few days.

We are beginning to convert fractions with unlike denominators into fraction with like denominators.  This is tricky, especially for students who don't know their multiplication facts.  Fifth grade begins the year with a fractions unit.  I strongly encourage students who don't know their facts to spend some time with summer working on them.. There are great websites with interactive flashcards, if you Google it.

Valentine's Day Party and Wonder Movie Acknowledgement on Thursday.

Homework:

Writing - Tomorrow we are taking the District Writing Assessment for Opinion Writing.  Students should think of a topic that they know and care about.  They can bring books and information from the internet to help them write.  They only have 30 minutes to write, so tomorrow will be used for writing, not research.  If students have not thought of a topic by tomorrow, they use precious writing minutes just sitting at their desk.

There is No School on Monday, January 21 due to Teacher Inservice.

Book Orders are coming home today.  If there is anything you would like to purchase, please do so by Friday, January 25.  Here is a copy of what Scholastic Book Orders sent me in my email this morning.  It is about changes to the pricing of books.

From Scholastic
Following a recent Supreme Court ruling, most states now require retailers to pay state and local sales tax where applicable. Below is important information on how this may impact your classroom ordering process.
Online Orders
Parent online orders will be charged applicable sales tax. The amount will be automatically calculated and applied at checkout.

To help reduce the burden of this additional expense, we have lowered the prices of all items online (with the exception of $1 books, which will remain the same price). We hope this will encourage families to order online and benefit from these savings!
Paper Flyer Orders
There are no additional charges for paper flyer orders and nothing extra for you to collect or calculate.

Tuesday, January 8, 2019

Please mark your calendars - the 4th grade field trip to the Milwaukee Brewers game will be on May 8.  Each class will be able to take 8 chaperones.  In order to chaperone you MUST have a Volunteer Background Check done.  I put a copy of the procedures in your child's mailbox today.  If you are thinking of volunteering, please get that background check done so you don't forget.  If you have already done a background check, it is good for 3 years - so please just check the expiration date to make sure you are current.

Please continue to play the working memory games that you were given at Parent/Teacher conferences.  Ms. Scott and I have seen an improvement, but the more your child can play these games the better for their working memory which is linked to concentration, focus and stamina. A strong working memory also helps with Math and Reading.

Welcome Back to everyone and Happy New Year.

We are beginning our Mythology Unit this week.  We will be studying Mythology for 3 weeks.  To end the unit we would like to show the movie Percy Jackson.  Since this is a PG rated movie we will need your permission for your child to see the movie. A permission slip went home today.  If you do not want your child to watch PG movies at school, there is a spot for that on the permission slip also.

I will accept December Reading Minutes until Friday this week.

A letter will be going home tomorrow about a Sledding Acknowledgement on Friday.  Any student who has all their assignments turned in by Friday will be able to spend our TGIF time on Friday sledding down Clovis Hill.
