Remember, there is no spelling this week.  We do not have school on Thursday or Friday, so due to the shortened week there would not be enough time to prepare for a spelling test.

Today I introduced the short-cut method for multi-digit multiplication.  This is the way that you probably learned when you were in elementary school.  We will be using graph paper for at least a few assignments so that students line up everything correctly.  Students may choose to use either the area model method or short-cut method for any assignments their 4th grade year, unless stated otherwise.

We learned a new working memory game today called "All Mixed Up."  For this activity we used playing cards.  Student A picks 5 cards from the stack and asks Student B to memorize them.  Student A will now turn the cards facedown, mix them up, and then turn the cards face up again leaving one card facedown.  Student B needs to tell which card is facedown.  As this version of the game becomes easy for your child, variations of this game can include leaving more than one card facedown , or using more than 5 cards.  Try this game at home.

Homework/Remembering 2-4.  We are learning to use the area model for multiplication.  The area model is not meant to be the final step in learning multiplication, it's an initial, developmental step to move kids in the right direction.  As tempting as it may be, please do not teach your child the standard algorithm yet - this is the way most of us learned to multiply larger numbers.  We will get to that in this unit and it becomes confusing when children are learning two ways at once.  Here is a link to a video that demonstrates the area model, if you are interested in learning more.

It was so nice to learn new things regarding Math but it is even nicer to be back.  I missed my class while I was gone.

Tomorrow your child will receive their VIP Pass for Reading Like A Rock Star.  If your child filled in their reading hours for September, they already have a stamp on their card.  If they missed this opportunity there is an opportunity on Saturday at the Menasha Fire Station to receive a stamp.  Information about this opportunity is stapled to the pass.

Anyone who turned in their Reading Minutes Calendar for September will receive a No Homework Pass.  Your child may use this pass for ONE side of a math homework assignment.  I spoke about saving the pass until there was a time that they really needed it because they won't receive many of these passes throughout the year.  If your child does not use this pass they may trade it in for $500 Cougar Cash at the end of the school year for our auction.

Madison Field Trip

This is just a reminder that Madison Field Trip Forms, Chaperone Forms, Lunch Forms and money for the Madison Field Trip are due by Friday, October 9, if you have not already turned them in.

A chaperone drawing will be held on Friday and if you would like to be part of that drawing you must have your form turned in and the school office must have a Criminal Background Check on file for you.

The Lunch Program also needs to have your lunch form turned in by Friday, if you are purchasing a sack lunch through the school.  They need to plan, order and make these meals ahead of time.

Also remember that your child will need to be at school by 6:20 on Thursday, October 15.  We will not wait for anyone because a time delay will cause us to miss our tour of the Capitol Building.

Friday, October 2, 2015

Friday, October 2, 2015

It is nice to be back in the classroom after 2 days of workshops/trainings.  Unfortunately I will be gone to a Math Conferences on Monday and Tuesday.  Hopefully after that I won't have anymore workshops until after Thanksgiving.  Mr. Ray, in addition to a substitute teacher will be here, so I am leaving the class in good hands.  There will not be a blog on Monday or Tuesday

Next week's spelling words will still be below your child's level.  Mr. Ray and I discovered that another week of routines will be helpful before they begin working with words at their level.

Unit 1 Math tests went home today.  On the second day of school we took a pre-test for the Unit.  This helped Mr. Ray and I assess what skills your child may have already known, thus needing enrichment, and those skills still needed to be taught.  Since this unit is primarily on adding and subtracting, just with larger numbers, typically there is little to no growth.  We took a pre-test on Thursday for Unit 2 which is multiplication with 3 x 1 digit numbers and 2 x 2 digit numbers.  Since this is usually a new concept for most students there is typically growth in this unit.

We have earned 62 Class Cougar Paws.  We voted to have a Pajama, Slipper, Pillow and Blanket Day on Wednesday - when I return.

Remember to log your September Reading time into the "Read Like a Rock Star" site.  It can be found under the Parent Student tab on the District Web Site.

The Book Order was delivered today and books were sent home with your child.

We began activities today to help us with our working memory.  We played a game called Single Digit Repeat.  Partner A picks a number 1-9.  Partner A repeats that number and adds one of their own.  Partner A repeats both numbers and adds one until they cannot remember the sequence.  "2..."2, 7"..."2, 7, 3"...    Try this game at home with your child.

Remember I will be gone Wednesday and Thursday.  There will not be a blog.  I will try to put homework on my webpage but I can not guarantee that either.

Homework:

Reading - read 20 minutes

Spelling - study for test

Monday, September 28, 2015

The September Book Orders have been shipped this morning.  The package is currently in Jefferson City, MO.  I will be gone Wednesday and Thursday for training so if the package doesn't arrive tomorrow during the school day, books won't be handed out until Friday.  Handing out books is not something I want a substitute teacher to do.

We have MAP Math testing tomorrow morning.  We will not be testing for Language this year due to the Spring State Testing being computer generated, so after tomorrow we will be finished with MAP testing for the Fall.  Please make sure that your child is well rested so that they can do their best.  I know that may be difficult with the Packer Game being tonight, but I anticipate the Packers being so far ahead by 8:00 that it will no longer be a game and a normal bed time will be easy   :)  Yes, even though I am a Michigan Wolverines and Detroit Tiger fan, I do cheer for the Packers.

There will not be a blog on Wednesday or Thursday because of my training.  I can not guarantee that I will be able to check my email before the end of the school day, so it would be best to contact the school office with any urgent messages regarding your child.

MAP Testing starts next week.  We will be taking tests for Reading on Monday morning, and Math on Tuesday morning.  Please make sure that your child is well rested so that they can do their best.

Tomorrow is Blue Jay Day.  Your child is encouraged to wear Blue Jay Clothes or the color blue.

Remember to turn in your Field Trip slips and money, if you have not done so already.

Tomorrow will be our first sorting test for spelling.  Remember the words this week and next week are probably below your child's level but it is easier to learn the sorts when they don't have to worry about memorizing the words.  Your child will be given 10 words that are part of this week's spelling sort and two mystery words.  The mystery words will fit into a sorting pattern - we just want to make sure that your child understands the pattern and is not just memorizing words.  Your child will receive one point for spelling the word correctly and another point if it is spelled correctly and placed in the correct sorting column.

Friday, September 18, 2015

Wednesday will be a Late Start

We will begin Spelling next week.  The first two weeks will be words below your child's level, as it is easier to learn the sorts and structures when they aren't also trying to memorize words.  After that, you will see words at your child's level.  Each student will be given words to keep at school and words to bring home to practice with an answer key.  On Monday I will also send home information about how we prepare for Friday's test at school and what your child should be doing at home to prepare for the test.  I trust that parents and children are doing their spelling assignments at home, so I won't be collecting any of the at home activities, as the test is enough assessment for spelling.

Homework:

Reading - read 20 minutes

Subtraction A - students who used their time wisely this morning may have had enough time to finish this at school.

I am sorry that there wasn't a blog yesterday but I was home sick.

We are beginning our next Unit of Study - Information Books.  The beginning parts of this unit will require a considerable amount of research on the famous person your child choose to write about.  We did research for one week to get us started but now that the students are learning more about the structure of the chapters, they will need to do more research.  MAP testing begins tomorrow and the computer lab and Chrome Book cart will be used for testing.  Because of this the additional research will become homework.  I have told students that they may count their research as their 20 minute reading time.  Students may still be confused about what exactly to research but as we work our way through the lessons, it will become clearer to them.  I sent home an example using  Martin Luther King Jr. to help you understand what we are looking for, in case there are any questions.  All students were required to check out a biography from the library, so students who do not have access to a computer may use this biography for their research.

Reading MAP test - Thursday morning.  Please make sure that your child is well rested so that they can do their best.   We have worked on goal setting for the MAP test.  Your child knows the number they received in the fall and the growth number that MAP calculated for them for the end of the year.  They set their own goal based on this data.

One of the main focuses of this Math unit is writing equations.  When you check over your child's homework, please make sure they are writing equations for the necessary problems.  Also, if they do not write equations on their quizzes/test, the problem is incorrect even if the computation is right because the benchmark states they need to write an equation.

There is not any math homework sheet tonight.  As a class, we still need practice on multi-step problems.

Homework:

Reading - read 20 minutes

Spelling - Describe Sort

Math - study flashcards.
