September Reading Minutes are due tomorrow.  If you lost your September calendar you can download one from my web page or simply write a note in your child's agenda that they read at least 400 minutes in September.

Spelling - Describe Sort - your child was given sorting words to take home tonight.  They should cut out these words, sort them and describe for you the features of their sort.

Math - study flashcards.  We will begin our multiplication unit on Thursday.  Student who know their multiplication facts have an easier time and spend less time on homework than those who struggle with their facts.

We will begin spelling/word study next week.  Your child will be bringing home a list of words to sort and study each evening.  A copy of each group's list will also be available on my web page.  Please look for the words on Monday and have your child sort and study each day for our test on Friday.

I have a link for the Solar System requirements and rubric on my web page.

Our next unit of study in Math is multiplication.  We will be multiplying 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers and 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers.  Please have your child continue to study their multiplication flash cards each evening.  This concept becomes more challenging to students who do not know their multiplication facts.  Knowing multiplication facts is a 3rd grade benchmark.

Remember that tomorrow is late start Wednesday.

Because of MAP testing we will have Library on WEdnesday.

I am sad to report that one of the fourth grade students had a father pass away.  Mr. Wayland, our school counselor, came to speak to the classes.  Please make sure that you speak with your child to get their feeling on this sad news.

We are currently learning our word sorts in anticipation of starting spelling late September - Early October.  Once spelling begins, we will be having a weekly test each Friday.  I will like the weekly words to my web page.

Students will be placed in Guided Reading Groups tomorrow.  If they use their time wisely in class, they should have enough time to complete their assignment.

Anyone that participated in the school fundraiser will need to return materials and/or checks tomorrow, if you haven't already done so.

MAP Testing begins next week.  We will be taking the reading portion on Monday, September 23, Math on Friday, September 27 and Language on Wednesday, October 2.  Please make sure that your child gets plently of sleep the night before so that they can do their best on the test.

We learned how to log into our G-Mail accounts.  Students can also log in from home by going to the district web page, clicking on the parent/student link and then finding the G-mail icon and clicking on it.  Students will first need to log in using their user id which is their last name, first initial and year of graduation (22).  Their password is their student id number which they all should have glued in their agendas.  Their email address is their user id@students.mjsd.k12.wi.us  Since this was our first experience logging in, it should be easier when we go to the lab next week.

Tomorrow we will be going to the computer lab to learn how to use the g-mail accounts and chat rooms.  Only students who have their permission slip in are allowed to use these programs.  I sent home another permission slip with those students who have not returned one.  If you would like your child to use their g-mail account, please have them return their permission slip by tomorrow.

Homework:

Math - study flashcards.  I have noticed that many students are still struggling with their multiplication and division facts on the remembering side of their math.  Please continue to practice flashcards each evening.  In fourth grade, we do NOT teach multiplication facts and multiplication tables will not help develop facts either.  Shortly we will begin 3 x 1 digit multiplication and 2 x 2 digit multiplication.  Students who do not know their facts, will have difficulty with these assignments.

What a great start to the school year - a lot of Cougar Paws and Acknowledgements were earned by displaying outstanding behavior throughout the building.

Just so you are aware, students are given 10 - 15 minutes to work on the remembering side of their math homework each morning.  Those students who use their time wisely sometimes are able to complete the entire side.  The homework side must be done after math class, typically at home, because I need to teach it before they can do it.  Today students were given an additional half hour to complete math homework at the end of the day.

If you have not already done so, please fill out and send back your beginning of year paperwork.  Mrs. Franczek, ort Literacy Coach, will be coming into my classroom within the next two week to teach and film a lesson for a district workshop.  There is a possibility that students may also be filmed so I need to know who has permission and who does not.  This presentation is for the new teachers in our district.
