Tomorrow we will be taking a District Assessment called IReady.  This will take the place of the MAP test we have taken in prior years.  Tomorrow we will take the Math portion in the afternoon and on Wednesday morning we will be taking the Reading portion.  Please make sure that your child is well rested so that they can do their best.

Permission slips are coming home for your child to get the opportunity to hear Gordon Korman, an author, speak.  Mr. Korman will be coming to the Menasha High School Auditorium and we have the opportunity to take a bus to listen to him the morning of October 12.

We began Word Work today.  We will be doing the next two weeks as an entire class so that students can learn the routines and sorts.  After that students will be broken up into groups.  Word Work will be on a rotation so that I can spend quality time with each group.  Groups will no longer receive their words on Monday and take tests on Friday.    They may receive words on Wednesday and take a test on Tuesday.  Once groups are set I will send home the routine schedule.

Research has shown that there are 8 different learning styles.  Earlier this week students took an 80 question survey to see which learning style they fit into.  Today they got the results back  Interests can change so nothing is set, but it is good for students to realize that their classmates learn in different ways and to think about how they learn best.  I will also share your child's results with you at Parent/Teacher Conferences.

There was a misprint on the invitation to the Family Night at the Blue Jays Game. It is September 28, 2018 against West De Pere.  Sorry for any confusion.

Field trip forms for the Madison Trip were sent home today.  Please read over the information carefully.  There are deadlines that need to be met.  Chaperone names will be picked on September 29.  There have been years when only 6 parents volunteered to chaperone and every one could go.  There have been years when I have had as many as 12 parents volunteer so a drawing had to be held.  Chaperones are not chosen on a first come, first serve basis.  Anyone who notifies me by the deadline would be eligible to have their name drawn.  If you have not done a Volunteer Background Check, please do so ASAP.  Information came home in the beginning of the year manila envelope.  If you have misplaced that information, your child can get it for you from the school office.  It can take several weeks for a background check to clear, so the sooner this is done the better.  Please remember the District Policy - even if your name is drawn to volunteer, if your background check is not cleared you can not go.

If you have not already turned in your Beginning of the Year paper work, I sent home another copy today.  Please get it filled out ASAP.

The first field trip of the year has been set.  We will be going to Madison on Wednesday, October 3.  We will be able to take a few parent chaperones.  If you are interested in chaperoning, please make sure that you have a Volunteer Background Check complete.  If you did one last year, it is good for 3 years.  I just need to see your card as verification of that.  If you have not completed a Volunteer Background Check, please do so ASAP.  The background check is only done online.  Information came home in the Beginning of the Year envelope.  The background checks can take up to a month and I wouldn't want someone to miss the opportunity because their background check was not cleared by the field trip day.  More information with permission slips will be sent home at a later date.

Students are bringing home flashcards that I wrote about in the Welcome Letter.  Some students still need to finish cutting out the cards at home.  These cards can stay at home.  Please have your child practice these at least a few times a week.  Practice time fits in nicely on days that they don't receive a Home/Connections.  We talked about ways that students could practice so that they become fluent and accurate with their facts.
